The Additional Qualification Course: Reading, Part 1, Primary/Junior, is designed for educators who aim to create inclusive reading environments using anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and anti-ableist approaches. This course deepens participants' knowledge of evidence-based, structured literacy programming aligned with the 2023 revised Language curriculum. Candidates will gain skills to teach foundational reading while affirming students' cultures and identities.
The course analyzes ministry policies, explores positionality, and examines the Grades 1-8 Language curriculum. Key topics include the science of reading, oral language development, and phonics instruction. Participants will also study culturally sustaining pedagogy, morphology, vocabulary, reading fluency, comprehension strategies, and assessment tools. The course concludes with a project presentation to showcase learning outcomes.
