The Additional Qualification Course: Reading, Part 1, Primary/Junior is designed for educators who aim to create inclusive reading environments using anti-racist and anti-oppressive approaches. This course focuses on deepening knowledge of evidence-based, structured literacy techniques aligned with the 2023 revised Language curriculum. Candidates will gain skills to teach foundational reading while affirming students' cultures and identities.
The course covers analyzing Ministry policies, exploring positionality, and examining the Grades 1-8 Language curriculum. Key topics include the science of reading, oral language development, and phonics instruction. Participants will also study culturally sustaining pedagogy, morphology, vocabulary, reading fluency, comprehension strategies, and assessment tools. The course concludes with a project presentation to showcase learning outcomes.
