The Additional Qualification Course: Reading, Part 1, Primary/Junior is designed for educators who aim to create inclusive reading environments using anti-oppressive and anti-ableist approaches. The course deepens participants’ understanding of evidence-based, structured literacy instruction aligned with the 2023 Ontario Language Curriculum. Candidates will develop skills to teach foundational reading skills while affirming students’ cultures, identities, and lived experiences.
Throughout the course, participants will analyze Ministry policies, explore culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogies, and examine the Grades 1–8 Language curriculum. Key areas of focus include the science of reading, oral language development, and explicit phonics instruction. Additional topics include morphology, vocabulary development, reading fluency, comprehension strategies, assessment practices, and tools that support equitable literacy instruction. The course concludes with an independent project that allows candidates to demonstrate their learning and application of course concepts.
This course consists of 125 hours of hybrid learning.
