In Teaching English Language Learners, Part 1, learners critically explore system, community, and classroom support for English Language Learners in Ontario. Participants will explore building inclusive environments for ELLs, guided by effective information gathering, culturally responsive practices, and the Truth and Reconcilation Commisions calls to action.

Learners will understand language acquisition theories and their application to second language learning, differentiating between everyday and academic English, and ESL and ELD programs. Additionaly they will build confidence in integrating literacy into various subjects, in adapting programs, and in incorporating environmental sustainability practices and indigenous perspectives.

Learners in this course will apply frameworks like Steps to English Proficiency (STEP) for fair and transparent assessment, supporting all learners, including those with Special Education needs. This course equips educators to create an inclusive and effective learning environment for ELLs.
