In Special Education Part 1, candidates will critically explore system, community, and classroom support for students receiving special education services in Ontario. Adopting an inclusive and equity-focused approach, the course aims to dismantle barriers and deepen understanding of Universal Design for Learning, Differentiated Instruction, and the legal and ethical implications of Individual Education Plans.
Candidates will engage in practical activities to address diverse classroom needs, reflecting on systemic and individual barriers while learning effective anti-racist, anti-colonial, and anti-oppressive practices. The course covers the five categories of exceptionalities, integrating UDL and DI into program planning, and exploring policies, regulations, and funding related to Special Education.
Additionally, candidates will investigate how IEPs support students, explore data collection and interpretation for special education, and discuss creating inclusive learning environments. Emphasis will be placed on optimizing learning spaces, including outdoor and land-based learning, to support all learners effectively.
