Special Education, Part 3: Leadership in Special Education

Special Education Part 3 builds on the knowledge and practices from Parts I and II, preparing educators for system and school leadership roles aimed at promoting equitable and inclusive special education practices. Rooted in anti-racist, anti-ableist, and anti-oppressive perspectives, this course emphasizes leadership that dismantles systemic barriers and advocates for the rights, dignity, and success of students receiving special education services, particularly Black and Indigenous identifying students and families.

Through inquiry, reflection, and collaboration, participants will deepen their understanding of the policies, practices, and structures that govern special education in Ontario, with a focus on promoting accountability and systemic change. The course explores leadership methods that focus on student identities, lived experiences, and human rights, equipping candidates to design, implement, and assess sustainable, inclusive programs.

Educators will critically assess their role as leaders in supporting colleagues, families, and communities, strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, and guiding professional learning. Attention will also be given to data-informed decision-making, accessibility in technology and instructional practices, and the development of affirming learning environments—including outdoor and land-based spaces—that honour student strengths and needs.

By the end of the course, candidates will be ready to lead school and board-level initiatives, influence policy and practice, and serve as advocates for equity and inclusion in special education.
