The Mathematics, Grades 7 & 8 course is designed to tackle the unique challenges of teaching abstract mathematical concepts at this critical stage. Embracing an anti-oppressive approach, the course focuses on equity and inclusion, aiming to critically examine past and present practices in teaching mathematics. Participants will explore theoretical foundations, instructional design, assessment strategies, and ethical considerations, ensuring all students, regardless of background, feel valued and engaged in their learning.
The course emphasizes equity-minded teaching, including addressing unconscious biases and understanding equitable assessment through a universal design for learning lens. Reflection on personal math experiences and the inclusion of decolonized perspectives will deepen participants’ understanding of how to support diverse learners.
The course also highlights creating mathematically-rich environments where students are represented and motivated. Educators will explore ways to foster positive math identities, promote social-emotional learning, and make mathematics an uplifting and joyful pursuit for all students.
